Samsung presented the Galaxy Note 20 during an Unpacked conference on August 5, 2020 at 16 p.m. Spanish time. Like every year, Samsung has just launched its new series of Galaxy Note during the summer, about 6 months after the release of its latest Galaxy S20 smartphones. As always, the manufacturer had a hard time keeping the characteristics of its new flagships secret. If some rumors had fallen by the wayside, most had been right. Screen size, processor, storage capacity, photo sensors, stylus… We summarize everything there is to know about the Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra in this file.

?When is the Galaxy Note 20 release date?

The Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra will be available on August 21, 2020. It is possible to buy both smartphones in preorder to August 20, 2020. During the pre-order phase, you have the choice between the following options:

?What design for the Galaxy Note 20?

In early July, Samsung released the first official photo of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on its official website (see below). We find a rectangular photo pad as on the S20 and many other flagships released recently (iPhone 11, Pixel 4, etc.). We also find a punch in the upper axial part of the slab, as on the latest flagships of the brand (Note 10 and S20). Similarly, Samsung has opted for a Galaxy S20-style flat-edge screen instead of the usual curved panels, but this design is reserved for the Notes 20 Ultra. The Note 20 is more classic and looks more like the S20 and S20+.

Le stylet and speakers are on the other hand placed in different places compared to the Note 10+, since they are now located on the lower left of the smartphone.

The colors of the standard Note 20

The colors of the two Note 20 vary from one model to another. So the Galaxy Note 20 is available in Mystic Green, Mystick Bronze and Mystick Grey. The Galaxy Notes 20 Ultra is available in Mystic Bronze, Mystic Black and Mystic White.

At the end of August 2020, a few days after the start of the marketing of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the iFixit site specializing in the repair of electronic products, disassembled the two smartphones. A procedure made difficult by the use of glue to seal the phone, provide water resistance and hold the battery in place. The site has been harshly critical of the phones' designs, saying replacing the screen or battery would be expensive and risky. They get the grade On 3 10, like the Galaxy S20 Ultra. A few days earlier, a YouTube channel also known for its teardowns came to the same conclusions.

? What do we know about the Note 20 screen?

The Note 20 panel has a diagonal of 6,7″, compared to 6,3″ for the Note 10. It is the same that equips the S20+. It displays a Full HD + definition of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The 19,5:9 ratio is retained. On the other hand, the standard Note 20 has to make do with a 60 Hz screen.

To contain the energy consumption of the screen, Samsung has bet on LTPO technology (low-temperature polycrystalline oxide), already used on Galaxy Watch and Apple Watch connected watches. It saves 5 to 15% energy compared to conventional LTPS displays.

The LTPO is notably capable of automatically adjusting the refresh rate of the screen according to the use made of the mobile. It is especially very useful for reducing the consumption of the Always-On functionality of devices, which allows you to continuously display information such as the time, the battery level or even notifications.

The screen of the Note 20 Ultra is getting bigger, getting closer to the symbolic bar of 7″. It is exactly 6,9″, just like the S20 Ultra released 6 months earlier. It is covered with a screen 6,9 pouces AMOLED Infinity-O (3200 x 1440 pixels) Wide Quad High Definition et compatible HDR10+.

The maximum refresh rate of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra screen is 120 Hz, like the S20 Ultra panel. However, the two panels are not strictly identical, because that of the Note 20 Ultra is able to modify the refresh rate dynamically depending on the content displayed and the applications used, which the S20 Ultra is not able to do (user must manually choose a 60Hz, 90Hz or 120Hz rate).

The refresh rate of the slab can therefore vary from 10 Hz to 120 Hz (with several intermediate levels). 10 Hz to display a photo slideshow, for example. 30 Hz for office applications and messaging. 60Hz for movies. 120 Hz for games compatible with this higher rate. Result, the screen of the Note 20 Ultra consumes on average 22% less energy than another 120Hz screen. At 10Hz, the Note 20 Ultra's screen consumes 60% less power.

The screen of the Note 20 Ultra is covered with a glass protection Gorilla Glass Victus. For its part, the standard Note 20 is satisfied with Gorilla Glass 5 protection. According to the DxOMate ranking, the Note 20 Ultra 5G Snapdragon and Exynos have the best screen on the market. Interestingly, DxOMark gives a better score to the American variant because the rendering delivered by the Snapdragon chipset is better!

? What is the Galaxy Note 20 processor?

In Europe, the Galaxy Note 20s are powered by an improved version of the Exynos 990 SoC, the chipset that already powers the S20s. In China, the United States and South Korea, Samsung has bet on a Snapdragon 865+ SoC.

On the memory side, the Note 20 offers 8 GB of RAM, while the Note 20 Ultra has 12. On the storage side, Samsung leaves the choice between 256 and 512 GB for the Note 20 Ultra. Only one storage capacity is available on the Note 20: 256 GB.

Samsung has made optimizations to cut short the criticisms aimed at the implementation of the Exynos 990 on the S20. Nevertheless, a disappointing first benchmark seems to confirm that the situation will be more or less identical on the Note 20, at least on the performance side.

This seems to confirm the fact that this year again, the performance gap between the European and American versions of the Note 20 will widen. To the chagrin of customers, as with the S20.

? How big are the batteries?

The Note 20's battery has a capacity of 4300 mAh. The Note 20 Ultra meanwhile has the right battery of 4500 mAh of the S20 + (compared to 4300 mAh for the Note 10+). No massive 5000 mAh battery like on the S20 Ultra then.

For charging, the Note 20 rises to the level of the S20 Ultra with a power of 45W wired and 15W wireless. A leak had also confirmed the presence of a 25W fast charger in the Note 20 Ultra box. As was the case with the S20 Ultra, Samsung will sell the 45W charger separately and invite users to checkout again for more efficient charging.

? What do we know about the camera?

The Note 20 Ultra hasa 108 MP module, the same that fitted the S20 Ultra (ISOCELL Bright HM1). The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also draws inspiration from the Galaxy S20 Ultra at the telephoto end. The larger of the two Note indeed takes up the periscopic telephoto lens (an angled lens allowing to increase the distance between the sensor and the lenses) of the S20 Ultra, thus making it possible to offer an optical zoom whose ratio is greater than 2x or 3x (that of the S20 Ultra reaches 4x). For its part, the standard Note 20 is satisfied with a main 12 megapixel photo sensor, another dedicated to the ultra-wide-angle of 12 MP also, and a telephoto lens of 64 MP.

Note that Samsung has abandoned its idea of offering a x100 zoom, a function that proved unconvincing on the S20 Ultra, the poor quality of the shots making them simply unusable. Under these conditions, the Note 20 Ultra must be satisfied with a 50x zoom.

Samsung is also abandoning the ToF (Time of Flight) module to measure depth of field and would instead bet on a laser module intended to improve autofocus. However, there is a sensor dedicated to the ultra wide-angle. Incidentally, the photo application has undergone a major overhaul, including a “Pro” video mode designed to make the set of sensors and microphones more capable of creating content. These new features appeared in a Note 20 Ultra hands-on video (see below).
