Delete automatic connection on Android

If you have a smartphone or tablet Android, you can avoid automatic connection to a Wi-Fi network by deleting it from the device memory (thus deleting its passkey) or by setting the automatic shutdown of Wi-Fi connectivity through third-party apps.

To make your device "forget" a Wi-Fi network, open the app Settings (the gear icon located on the home screen or in the drawer, the screen with the list of all the apps installed on the device), then select the item Wi-Fi, tap on the name of the network to be dissociated from the device and presses the button forget present in the box that opens.

If you want to disable the automatic connection request for open Wi-Fi networks, always in the menu dedicated to Wi-Fi networks, press the button Menu, agreed Advanced settings and move up OFF the lever for the option Network notification.

How do you say? Would you like to avoid making your device "forget" the passwords of Wi-Fi networks? Then you could install an app to program it automatic shutdown of Wi-Fi based on various days and / or times. There are so many applications suitable for the purpose on the Play Store (just search for "Wi-Fi timer"), but the only one that worked well in my tests is Bags.

If you have never heard of it, Tasker is a very advanced application for Android that, at a one-off cost of 2,99 euros, allows you to program a wide range of automatic operations based on various triggers (therefore various triggering events) . We can compare it a bit to software like Keyboard Maestro for macOS or AutoHotkey for Windows. Its potential, therefore, is endless, as long as you waste some time to learn how it works.

To set the automatic shutdown of Wi-Fi with Tasker, download the app from the Play Store, start it and go to the tab profiles. Press the button capacitor positive (+) lead located at the bottom right and creates a new profile based on Time and / or Day, based on your preferences (i.e. when you want to disable Wi-Fi). Next, tap on back arrow, tap the button to create one new business, assign a name to the activity (eg. Wi-Fi shutdown) and presses on the symbol ().

On the next screen, press the button capacitor positive (+) lead, near the end WiFi in the filter field and choose the action WiFi from the search results. Then set the drop-down menu at the top to OFF and press the back arrow to save the changes. From now on, Wi-Fi will automatically turn off on the day and / or time set in Tasker.

If you want, you can also follow the same procedure to create a rule that can automatically re-enable Wi-Fi.

Disabling the Wi-Fi will activate the 3G / 4G connection. To also disable the 3G / 4G network, access the menu Settings> More> Mobile network and move up OFF the function lever Mobile data.

Delete automatic connection on iOS

Unfortunately, iPhones and iPads do not offer the ability to disable automatic connection to Wi-Fi networks, nor to schedule the connection to be deactivated. The only thing that can be done is to select a network and delete it from the iOS settings, so that the system no longer remembers its access password and, therefore, can no longer use it automatically.

To clear a Wi-Fi network from your iPhone or iPad, open the app Settings (the gear icon on the home screen), go up Wi-Fi and tap on the icon (I) placed next to the name of the network you want to make your device "forget". At this point, press on the voice Disassociate this network, Reply Dissociate the notice that appears on the screen and that's it.

If you want to completely disable Wi-Fi connectivity, instead, go to the menu Settings> Wi-Fi and move up OFF the function lever Wi-Fi: in this way, iOS will continue to remember the access keys to the networks but will not connect to them and will use (if available) the 3G / 4G data network instead.

To also disable the 3G / 4G network, go to the menu Settings> Cellular of iOS and move on OFF the lever for the option Cellular data. To avoid automatic connection to open Wi-Fi networks, go to the menu Settings> Wi-Fi and deactivate the lever for the option Request network access.
