Restore Windows 7 MBR via disk

If you want to restore MBR Windows 7 and you are interested in understanding how to do this using the operating system installation DVD or a recovery disc (if you remember well I explained how to create it in my guide on how to create a recovery disc Windows 7) the first steps you need to do are to turn on the computer, insert the disk in your possession into it, access the BIOS and set the PC to start from the CD / DVD player.

Generally to access the BIOS it is sufficient to repeatedly press the key to access the setup when buying the PC start-up screen. Usually, the key to enter the BIOS is F2, F10 o Canc, in any case you should find it indicated in one of the corners of the computer home screen with a message like press F2 to enter setup.

Once you have entered the BIOS settings panel (a screen with a blue or gray background full of writings) go to the section Advanced o Boot using the arrow keys on the computer keyboard, highlight the item Boot sequence o Boot sequence and press the button Submit to change the order of devices that the computer must check to boot. Then set the unit CD / DVD ROM as a first choice, highlighting the item relating to the latter and pressing the key Submit computer keyboard, and press Esc to return to the main BIOS screen.

After making changes, you can exit the panel and save the BIOS settings by pressing the key Esc of your computer keyboard. Then highlight the item Yes o Yes in the message about saving settings that appears in the center of the screen and press Submit to exit the BIOS and restart the computer.

At this point the disc inserted in the computer should start automatically. Alternatively, you may see a message appear on your computer screen inviting you to press any key to boot the PC from the disk, then press any button on the keyboard.

After following these steps and after waiting a few moments you should see a Windows 7 window named Windows installation. Then press on the button NEXT located at the bottom right and then click on the item Reset the computer.

In the new screen that will be shown to you at this point, make sure that there is a check mark on the first option, make sure that the item is highlighted in the box in the center of the window. Windows 7 sotto the dicitura Operating System then click on the button NEXT. Then click on Command Prompt e poi pigia sul pulsating Restart.

You will then be shown the operating system command prompt on the screen. To restore Windows 7 MBR, proceed by typing the command bootsect /nt60 c: /mbr if the operating system was installed on C: or type the command bootsect /nt60 sys /mbr for a complete reset.

In the unfortunate event that the commands indicated are not recognized, you will have to navigate to the directory of the disk inserted in the computer to understand which is the correct text string to type. From the starting position X:Sources then write D: I awarded Submit, write then You and press again Submit to verify that this is the DVD or if it is another partition. If there are more disks or more partitions, try to locate the DVD directory by going in alphabetical order, writing E:, F: and so on. If the DVD is in D: type the command cd boot –award Submit and then run the command bootsect /nt60 d: /mbr.

When the operation is completed, close the Seven command prompt by pressing on x located at the top right and eject the Windows 7 installation or recovery disc that you previously inserted into your computer then click on the button Restart attached to the system recovery options window.

At this point you can finally say you are satisfied: you have successfully completed the procedure by which to restore MBR Windows 7. To confirm this, once the system has restarted you can normally access Seven and use the operating system without problems just as it happened until a before the Master Boot Record began to make the "tantrums".

Restore Windows 7 MBR via key

If, on the other hand, you want to restore the Windows 7 MBR but you do not have either the operating system installation DVD or a recovery disc or your computer's CD / DVD player is broken, you can do this by using a bootable USB stick.

In order to create a bootable Windows 7 USB stick, the first thing you need to do is get a pendrive of sufficient capacity (it must have at least 4 GB of free space). In addition to the pendrive, find theISO image the version of the operating system. Then click here to be able to connect to the main page of the software Windows 7 USB / DVD Download tool, a free program from Microsoft that is used to create a USB stick for the installation of Windows 7. After you have found everything you need, proceed by starting the creation of the bootable stick (if you remember correctly I have explained to you how to create it in my guide on how to create bootable USB Windows 7).

After creating the key, turn on the computer, connect it to the PC and access the BIOS in order to set the system to boot from USB. To do this, you can follow the instructions I gave you in the previous lines, when I explained how to restore Windows 7 MBR via installation CD or recovery disc, taking care, this time, to set the drive KEY as a first choice.

After making changes, exit the panel and save the BIOS settings by pressing the key Esc of your computer keyboard. Then highlight the item Yes o Yes in the message about saving settings that appears in the center of the screen and press Submit to exit the BIOS and restart the computer.

At this point the Windows 7 key inserted in the computer should start automatically. Alternatively, you may see a message appear on the computer screen inviting you to press any key to start the PC from the pendrive, then press any button on the keyboard.

After following these steps and after waiting a few moments you should see a Windows 7 window named Windows installation. Then press on the button NEXT located at the bottom right and then click on the item Reset the computer.

In the new screen that will be shown to you at this point, make sure that there is a check mark on the first option, make sure that the item is highlighted in the box in the center of the display window Windows 7 sotto the dicitura Operating System then click on the button NEXT. Then click on Command Prompt e poi pigia sul pulsating Restart.

Once this is done you will be shown the command prompt of the operating system. To restore Windows 7 MBR, proceed by typing the command bootsect /nt60 c: /mbr if the operating system was installed on C: or type the command bootsect /nt60 sys /mbr to perform a full reset.

Once the procedure for restoring MBR Windows 7 has been completed, close the Seven command prompt by pressing on x located at the top right and eject the bootable pendrive of the operating system that you previously connected to the USB socket of the computer. To finish, click on the button Restart attached to the system recovery options window so that you can access the operating system again without problems.
