Preliminary information

Before devoting part of your time to reading the following lines it seems only right to make a clarification. Unlike the other versions of the operating system from Microsoft, on Windows 10 there is no special option that allows you to completely block the installation of updates.

However, you do not have to worry: you can still succeed in your intent by taking advantage of some special features attached to the operating system that allow you to cope with the thing while still guaranteeing the installation of any updates but in a much less, so to speak, "aggressive" way.

Currently there are different systems available thanks to which it is possible to obtain a result almost similar to blocking updates.

How to block Windows 10 Home updates

From Windows 10 1903 (May 2019 Update), Windows 10 allows you to block, or rather, temporarily prevent the installation of updates via Windows Update. To take advantage of this possibility, click on the button Home (the flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen) and click on thegear present on the left side of the menu that opens, in order to access the panel PC settings.

At this point, click on the icon Update and security, then on the button Suspend updates for 7 days and you will suspend Windows 10 updates for 7 days: you can repeat this operation for a total of 5 times, for a total of 35 days of suspension of updates.

Alternatively, you can click on the item Advanced options and select an exact date until which to block Windows Update (always for a maximum of 35 days) using the drop-down menu Select date. In case of second thoughts, to restore the operation of Windows Update, click on the button Resume updates.

How to block Windows 10 Enterprise and Pro updates

The versions Windows 10 Enterprise and Pro offer the same functions to disable automatic updates of Windows 10 Home, but this only from version 1903 of the operating system onwards.

If you are using an older version of Windows 10 and have an Enterprise or Pro edition of the system, you can take advantage of specific settings to temporarily block the installation of updates via. Windows Update

Going into more detail, what you need to do is press the button Home (the Windows flag icon located in the lower left corner of the screen), click on theicona dell'ingranaggio present in the menu that opens (to access the menu Settings) and select the icon Update and security from the window that appears on the screen.

At this point, select the voice Windows Update from the left sidebar, go up Advanced options and use the drop-down menu located under the item A feature update includes new features and improvements. It can be postponed for the following number of days to set the number of days (up to 365) for which to postpone the installation of updates that include new features (eg Creators Update or Fall Creators Update) and the drop-down menu located under the item A quality update includes security improvements. It can be postponed for the following number of days to set the number of days (up to 30) to postpone installing security updates.

The stalk Pause updates placed at the bottom of the page, if activated, it suspends all updates for a period of 35 days.

Other ways to block Windows 10 updates

If the procedures described above did not satisfy you, perhaps because you are using an older version of Windows 10 and want to keep it on your PC without installing the newer ones, you can try to put these other tips into practice, in order to block the operating system updates.

Notification for restart schedule

If you are interested in understanding how to block Windows 10 updates, the first system I suggest you take advantage of is to activate the function for notification for restart schedule: this is a feature that allows you to install updates in a scheduled manner as well as some useful accessory features to delay and prevent the installation of certain updates.

If the solution in question interests you, the first things you need to do to be able to block Windows 10 updates are to press the search field next to the button Home on the taskbar, to type settings of Windows update and to click on the first result that is shown to you.

In the window that at this point will be shown on the desktop presses on the item Advanced options and click on the menu under the item Choose how to install updates. Afterward, select the option Notification for restart schedule. Taking into account that on Windows 10 there is no function that allows you to completely disable the installation of updates, know that by selecting this option the updates available for the operating system will be downloaded anyway but you will be asked to schedule a restart to complete the installation of the same. If, on the other hand, the one you are using is a non-flat Internet connection, the updates will not be downloaded.

Also in this regard, I suggest you put a check mark on the box next to the item Delay updates. By selecting this item some of the new features available for the operating system will not be downloaded and installed for several months.

In addition to intervening to try to block Windows 10 updates, it is then possible to interrupt the automatic download procedure of updates for other Microsoft products. To do this, make sure that there is no check mark on the box next to the item Download updates for other Microsoft products during the Windows update.

After making all the various changes thanks to which to block Windows 10 updates, confirm the application by simply closing the window displayed on the screen.

In case you have second thoughts, you can always cancel the procedure by which to block Windows 10 updates. To restore everything to the system default settings, access the section again. Windows Update settingsclick your Advanced options, select the voice Automatic (recommended) from the drop-down menu located under the item Choose how to install updates and remove the check mark you added next to the item  Download updates for other Microsoft products during the Windows update and next to the item Delay updates.

Set up a metered connection

Did the solution to block Windows 10 updates that I pointed out in the previous lines not satisfy you? Are you still looking for a system that allows you to avoid installing any updates for the operating system on your PC? If the answer is yes, then activating the option dedicated to metered connections could be the right choice. If you are not already aware of it, know that this is a particular feature that Microsoft has chosen to include in its latest operating system and represents a sort of lifeline for all those who have a connection with limited data quantities. In fact, by activating this function the download of data in the background is blocked, both for the operating system and for the apps installed, in order to avoid surprise costs for the user. As a result, the download of updates will also be postponed. The functionality in question, however, this is good to keep in mind, can be activated only and exclusively if the connection used is of the Wi-Fi type, unfortunately the same is not true for connections made via cable, I'm sorry.

If this solution interests you, you can block Windows 10 updates by doing the following. To begin, click on the search field located next to the button Home on the taskbar, then type settings and click on the result placed under the heading Best match.

In the new window that will now open on the desktop, click on Rete and Internet then locate the item Wi-Fi from the alter bar located on the left and click on it. In the screen that will now be shown to you, click on the item Advanced options placed under the name of the Wi-Fi network to which your PC is connected, locate the entry Set as a metered connection e poi carries his ON the relevant switch by clicking on it.

After having carried out all the steps that I have indicated to block updates Windows 10 confirm the application of the changes made simply by closing the window that you see on the screen.

If you have to reconsider and, consequently, in the event that the whole procedure just seen to block Windows 10 updates does not interest you anymore, keep in mind that you can always retrace your steps by disabling the functionality in question. To do this, simply access the section again Rete and Internet Windows 10 settings, press on the item Wi-Fi located on the sidebar, click Advanced options, select the wireless network that your computer is connected to and bring up OFF the switch present under the item Set as a metered connection.

Strumento Show or Hide Updates

As I told you, as an alternative to the features attached directly to the operating system, another solution to block Windows 10 updates is to resort to the use of a tool designed precisely for the purpose in question. This program allows you to block every single update package available for download. The program works by hiding the updates available for Windows 10 and, consequently, preventing their automatic installation.

You can download the tool that allows you to block Windows 10 updates on your computer by clicking here and then pressing on the item Download the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter package now. attached to the web page that is shown to you.

Then wait for the download of the tool to be completed, then click on the file you just obtained and wait for the main window of the program to be visible on the desktop, click on the button NEXT e seleziona l'opzione Hide updates. Afterward, wait a few moments for the changes to be applied and validated, then click once more NEXT and, finally, press on Close.

Subsequently, you will be able to view the updates available for your PC with Windows 10 installed that you have proceeded to hide by starting the tool again, by clicking on NEXT and pressing on Show hidden updates. To close the tool window simply presses on x located in the upper right part of the program window.
